A nature experience in the Alnesdalen valley where the destination is Mannen – a massive boulder on a summit. Maybe you will catch a glimpse of Kjerringfonna?
Follow the Fv 63 road from Åndalsnes towards the Trollstigen road. Park at Strupen, at the footbridge across the river, 800 metres after the Trollstigen visitor centre.
Cross the bridge beside the car park and turn right onto the path. Follow the river and then walk along beside the Alnesvatnet lake. The path becomes a bit unclear after 300 metres, but then becomes clearer the rest of the way to Alnesvatnet lake. Follow the path, which is clearly marked by cairns, up the left side of the Alnesdalen valley. An ascent takes you up to Alnessteinen, a distinctive cliff formation in the middle of the valley. After Alnessteinen, the path descends slightly before continuing gently up the valley.
At the end of the valley, there is a slight ascent up to the left of a stream up to Børtjønna lake. Walk along the left side of the lake, and then on a marked trail that cuts up and across some scree to a moraine. Walk along the moraine, and then up a steep ascent to the Mannen boulder.
Mannen is a huge boulder that can be seen from Romsdalen valley. From Mannen, there are great views up the Romsdalen valley and down towards the Trollstigen road. Just before you come to Mannen, there is a helicopter platform and a measuring station, which measures movement in the Børa massif. The whole massif is moving down towards the Romsdalen valley.
The fact that many of the names here have the prefix Alnes is because the Alnesdalen valley is situated above the village of Alnes in the Romsdalen valley. This area was used by those who lived down in the valley. It was common back then to walk up the hillside directly from the Romsdalen valley.
